Surrounding the Tennessee River where Lake Wheeler collects, the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge spans over 34,500 acres. Many waterfowl that head south for the winter make the refuge their temporary home, and these along with a huge variety of fish, mammals and amphibians can all be spotted in the refuge. Allowing fishing and seasonal hunting, along with simple wildlife observation, the park sits to the north and east of Decatur, surrounding the massive lake.
